Inglis: Make E-Verify permanent

(November 18, 2009)

U.S. Rep. Bob Inglis (R-SC) sent a letter to colleagues in the House of Representatives today asking members to sign on to legislation that would make the E-Verify program permanent.

In a recent editorial The Greenville News noted the success of South Carolina’s use of E-Verify pursuant to a new state statute. 97% of the businesses currently subject to the statute (those with 100 or more employees) were found to be in compliance.

“As our economy recovers, the jobs magnet for illegal immigrants will return,” Inglis wrote. “If we don’t turn off that magnet through simple verification measures, the benefits of the recovery will be diverted from American citizens. The federal government must do its part to make the E-verify system work.”

In October, Congress passed a new three-year extension as part of the Homeland Security spending bill.

Report Shows E-Verify is Working Let’s Make It Permanent

Dear Colleague:

Last week, the Greenville News published an analysis of a new state law in South Carolina that requires all large employers to use the E-Verify system. The paper reported that over 97% of businesses currently subject to the statute (those with 100 or more employees) were found to be in compliance, and that many who were not avoided penalties by becoming compliant.

As our economy recovers, the jobs magnet for illegal immigrants will return. If we don’t turn off that magnet through simple verification measures, the benefits of the recovery will be diverted from American citizens. The federal government must do its part to make the E-verify system work.

I’ve attached an editorial in the Greenville News that urges Congress to make the E-Verify program permanent. To become an original cosponsor of legislation to make the E-Verify program permanent, please contact Whitt Hance in my office.
